Family History

Umberto was born in 1891 the son of Joseph Mario, a professor of music, and Bessie Bruno (née Norris). His father was born in Salerno, Italy, in 1857 and his mother in 1868 at Wareham, Dorset. They married c.1888 and had nine children one dying in infancy. Umberto’s siblings were Giacomo b.1896 Italy, Rosa b.1893, Giuseppe b.1900, Elvira b.1903, Silvia b.1904, Effore b.1905, Linda b.1908 and Maria b.1911. All the remaining children were born in Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 32 Birkin Avenue Hyson Green Nottingham. Umberto married Lillian Elizabeth Palethorpe 11/5/1893 and they had two children Christina Eva (28/10/1914) and Evelyn Annie (16/11/1916). With effect from 18/3/1918 Lillian received a weekly pension of 22/11d for herself and two children.

Military History

Umberto enlisted on 7th July 1916 at Nottingham. Trained at Grimsby, on 16th December 1916 he embarked from Folkstone to join the British Epeditionary Force in France. He disembarked the same day at Boulogne and was posted 3/1/1917. Thiepval Memorial Pier & Face 1C

Nottingham Evening post 17th September 1917: “BRUNO. – Killed in action, August 26th, 1917, Private Umberto Bruno, aged 26 years, late of the Hippodrome Orchestra.
