William George Brown

William George Brown was baptised on 24th May 1891 at Sawley, the son of James Smith Brown a coal miner hewer and Sarah Brown née Dicker of 160 Northgate, New Basford, Nottingham. James Smith was born in 1855 at Broughton, Nottinghamshire, Sarah Dicker was born in 1853 in Berkshire, married in 1879 their marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield registration district they had 5 children. In 1911 the family is living at 160 Northgate New Basford, James Smith is 56 yrs and a coal miner hewer, In 1911 William George has left the family home and has joined the Army, we find him in Barracks at Portsmouth , he is 19 yrs , single and a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. William married Ellen (born 9th June 1888) they lived at 47 Wordsworth Road, Radford, they had a daughter Phyllis born 8th December 1914. (CWGC) gives there address as 8 Hawarden Terrace Gregory Boulevard Nottingham. Commencing 27th December 1915 his widow Ellen was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.
