Tom Bignall was born in 1897 he was the son of Thomas a levers lace worker and his first wife the late Miriam Eleanor Bignall née Vickers and the brother of Fred and Stanley Bignall. Thomas was born in 1867 at Nottingham Miriam Eleanor Vickers was born in 1875 at Caistor, Lincolnshire she died in 1903 aged 28 yrs, they were married on 26th December 1896 at St Paul's Church, Hyson Green. in 1896 at Nottingham, they had 3 children. Thomas married Emma Castledine in 1909 at Nottingham. In 1911 the family lived at 6 Rochdale Terrace Hyson Green Nottingham, Thomas 44 yrs is levers lace worker, he is living with his wife Emma 4 yrs and his 3 children, Tom 13 yrs an errand boy, Fred 12 yrs a scholar and Stanley 9 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal Tom Bignall enlisted on 15th April 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 19 yrs and 1 month, he was a box cutter he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was appointed Lance Corporal 1st May 1915 and went to France 17th June 1916 embarking from Folkstone and landing at Boulogne. He was killed in action, 31st August 1916, whilst attached to the 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
