He was the son of Celia Allen (née Leavers, later Green) and the brother of Leonard (killed in action (13/9/1916) and Albert Arthur Allen. He was the half brother of Lucy, Annie Mary, Charles, Fanny, Robert and Frederick Green. In 1911, the family lived at 1, Adams Cottages, Lindsay Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham with Celia's second husband George Green. John was the husband of Frances (née Lane) Allen.
