Family History

Albert George Abbott, known as George, was born in the 3rd Quarter of 1883 to Joseph and Drusilla Abbott who lived at 8 Radford Road, Nottingham. On 27th September 1904, George married Harriett Mary Ware (born 26th August 1884 Queenstown County Cork ) at Tynemouth Catholic Church. They had three children - Drusilla Mary Ellen born 12th October 1905, Benjamin Ortzon born 1st April 1907 and Alice Theresa born 1st March 1909. All were born at Tynemouth. Following his death his widow Harriett Mary was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 21st February 1916.

Military History

George Abbott enlisted in 1914 probably in August or September at North Shields. He entered theatre on 20th April 1915 and was listed as wounded in the War Diary of 16th June 1915 during the Action at Bellewaarde Ridge. In fact, George had been killed. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial Ypres. Research John Beech
