Family History

John Cline (junior) was born in Huthwaite in 1898 and was the son of John (senior) a coal miner and Amelia Cline, née Springthorpe John (senior) had been born in 1866 in Roscommon Ireland and his wife Amelia was born in 1873 in Tamworth, Staffordshire they were married in 1893 and had 9 children , sadly 3 of whom died in infancy prior to 1911. Their children were :- Maggie b1896, John b1898, Herbert b1901, Gertrude b1903, James b1906 and William b1910 all the children were born in Huthwaite. In 1911 census they lived on Club Yard Huthwaite. John senior is 45 yrs and a coal miner loader, he is living with his wife Amelia 38 yrs and their children, Maggie 15 yrs, John 13 yrs, Herbert 10 yrs, Gertrude 8 yrs, James 5 yrs and William 1 yr.

Military History

Private John Cline enlisted at Mansfield on 13th December 1916 , he gave his age as 18 yrs and 9 months and his address as 38 Club Yard, Main Street, Huthwaite, he gave his religion as church of England and his occupation as that of a labourer. He first served with the service number 68450 with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment . He went out to the Western Front on 28th February 1917 embarking from England on 1st March 1917 , arriving and disembarking the same day in France. He went to the camps at Etaples on 2nd March 1917 and was posted to the 16th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment. He was transferred in the field on 18th April 1917 to the 8th battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 3rd May 1917 aged only 19 years of age. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.

Notts. Free Press 26th April, 1918. Local Soldiers Killed Private J. Cline, Huthwaite After being reported as missing since May 3rd., 1917, Private John Cline 28805, East Yorks, of 38, Club Yard, Huthwaite, has been officially reported as dead. Though enquiries have been made in various directions, his parents have been unable to obtain any further information. The deceased soldier, who was 19 years of age, enlisted on December 9th. 1916, and was drafted to France on February 28th. 1917. Prior to joining the Army he worked at the New Hucknall Colliery.
