Father: Frederick Heggs, born 1860 in Nottingham, worked as a framework knitter. Mother: Mary Jane Heggs, brn 1860 at Sleaford, Lincolnshire.Brothers: Hubert, born in 1877 and working as a framework knitter,Leonard, born in 1887 and working as a hairdresser, William, born in 1893 and Bertie, born in 1896. Sisters: Gertrude, born in 1885 and working as a sun bonnet maker and Hilda, born in 1904.The family lived at 42 Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton, Nottingham, before moving to 16 Windmill Lane, Sneinton and finally to 7 Lord Nelson Street, Sneinton.

Military History

In 1911 Frederick Heggs was a corporal in the 2nd Battalion, York & Lancaster Regiment. In 1914 he was promoted to sergeant with the No. 8948. He arrived in France on 09/09/1914. He later received a commission. The battalion moved to the Beaumont Hamel sector during the Battle of the Somme on 20/08/1916. Second Lieutenant Heggs was killed in action the following day and was buried at Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps.

Obituary published 29th August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HEGGS. – Killed in action, August 21st, Second-Lileutenant Frederick Heggs, York and Lancs., age 26, beloved son of Fred and Jennie Heggs, 7, Lord Nelson-street.
