Edward Lake Flewitt was born in 1899 in West Bridgford and was the youngest son of Thomas a timber merchant and Gertrude Emily Flewitt, née Hancock of 77 Musters Road, West Bridgford, NottinghamHis father Thomas was born in 1855 in Nottingham and his mother Gertrude Emily Hancock was born in 1868 in Nottingham, they were married on 12th June 1888 at St Peters Church, Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Alfred Cyril b1890, Thomas Walter b1891, Frank Hadfield b1892, Gertrude Sylvia b1897 and Edward Lake b1899, all the children were born in West Bridgford. His mother Gertrude died on 7 January 1906 she was 38 yrs old. In the 1911 census the family are living at 77 Musters Road, West Bridgford and are shown as Thomas 56 yrs a widow and timber merchant he is living with his children, Alfred Cyril 21 yrs a solicitor, Thomas Walter 20 yrs a lace warehouseman, Frank Hadfield 19 yrs a timber merchants salesman, Gertrude Sylvia 14 yrs a scholar and Edward Lake 12 yrs a scholar, also living with them are two servants , Annie Holland 24 yrs a cook and Edith Holland 23 yrs a housemaid. His father Thomas died on 3 November 1938 aged 83.
Second Lieutenant Edward lake Flewitt was commissioned on 14th September 1917 and joined D Company 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment at Hill 70, near Mazingarbe, France, 1st November 1917. He was killed in action, 7th January 1918, aged 19, during the raid on the German trenches at St. Elie, France. He is buried/Commemorated : Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France. Plot 2. Inscription on family headstone, Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery: 'In loving memory of Edward Lake Flewitt (Sherwood Foresters) aged 19 years. Killed in action in France, 7th Jan 1918. Youngest son of Thomas and Gertrude Emily Flewitt.'Family memorial, St Giles Church, West Bridgford: 'In memory of Thomas Flewitt who worshipped in this church for fifty years and died on the 3rd November 1938 in his 84th year and of Gertrude Emily his wife, who died on the 7th January 1906. Also of their youngest son Edward Lake Flewitt 2nd Lieutenant 7th (Robin hoods) Sherwood Foresters, who died in action in France on the 7th January 1918 in his 20th year. This screen and pulpit were erected by the surviving sons and daughter, AD 1948'.
