William was born in 1885 in South Wingfield and was the son of Abraham a colliery worker and his wife Agnes Bradwell nee Carlin. Abraham was born in 1856 in Sutton Bonnington and Agnes in South Wingfield in 1859, they were married in June 1882 in the Belper Registration district and had the following children: - George b1883, William b1885, Walter b1886, Mary b1889,James b1891, Beatrice b1893, Abraham b1894, Arthur b1897 and Ellen b1898 all born in South Wingfield. Agnes died in 1899 in the Belper Registration District aged 40 yrs , leaving her husband Abraham a widow to bring up their large family. It was not long before Abraham re married in December 1899 to Harriett Bramley again in the Belper Registration district. By the 1911 census the family are living at 19 George St, Sutton in Ashfield, Abraham now 55 yrs and a colliery labourer, above ground is living with his wife Harriett 57 yrs and their children , James 20 yrs a coal miner, Abraham 17 yrs a coal miner, Arthur 15 yrs a coal miner ganger, Beatrice 18 yrs and Helen (Ellen) 13 years.
William enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 11th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. His medal index card states he first enetered a theatre of war in France on 21st July 1915. He was wounded in action and returned to England where he was treated and later died at Newcastle on Tyne 1st Northern General Hospital on 16th November 1915. He was returned to his family and buried in Huthwaite Cemetery on 20th November 1915.
