By 1911 census we find him on board HMS Fame a torpedo boat destroyer, in Hong Kong, China , he is single and Chief Stoker. His probate record , proven in Nottingham on 16th February 1917 gives his details as George Henry West of 111 Morley Ave, Mapperley, Nottingham Chief Stoker Royal naval who died on 23rd October 1916 at sea , his effects of £221. 8 shillings and 7 pence were left to his brother John William West a plumber

HMS Genista Sloop owned by the British Navy and built in 1916 by Napier & Miller; 1,250 tons; 267.7x33.5x11.7 ft.; 2,000 i.h.p.; 16.5 knots; triple expansion engines; cylindrical boilers; two 4 x7 in. guns. HMS Genista (Lt. Cdr. John White), was engaged in minesweeping duties off the W. coast of Ireland when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine on October 23rd, 1916. she sank very rapidly, taking with her all her officers and 73 ratings. Only 12 ratings were saved
