Family History

Arthur Williams was born in 1894 he was the son of Moses a coal miner hewer and Agnes Williams née Jones and the brother of Sarah Jane and Agnes Williams. Moses was born in 1860 at Bretton, Flintshire, Agnes Jones was born in 1862 at Burton, Cheshire, they were married on 28th December 1889 at Hawarden, Flintshire, they went on to have 12 children, sadly seven of them died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Blackwell House Huthwaite Nottinghamshire, Moses is 51 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Agnes 49 yrs and three of their children, Sarah Jane 30 yrs Arthur 17 years a coal miner and Agnes 12 yrs. Arthur married Maggie Davis (born 25th December 1894) in 1913 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they lived at 58 High Pavement, Sutton in Ashfield, they had a son Walter born in 1914 who died in 1915, they went on to have a daughter Maggie born 26th April 1915 and a son Leslie born 17th June 1917. Commencing 3rd June 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military History

Arthur Williams enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield, he entered theatre (France & Flanders) after 1 January 1916. He only served with 9th battalion. On 4 October 1917 the battalion successfully attacked the Village of Poelcappelle and despite heavy losses, took all of its objectives. Arthur was killed during this attack and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. John Morse
