He was the son of Frederick a lace maker and Adeline Whitehead. In 1901 he was living with grandparents Joseph and Mary at West Gate Chilwell. In 1911 he was a patient at the Ransom Sanatorium Ratcher Hill Southwell Road Mansfield Nottinghamshire (presumably suffering from TB). He was then 16 and employed as a lace hand at Chilwell.
He joined up on 19th July 1916 and served with 32nd company of the Royal Garrison Artillery . His service record contains a discharge order dated 27/09/1917 at Dover, which states Gunner 107953 of 32nd Company Royal Garrison Artillery aged 22 years 10 months was to be discharged from the army due to ‘being no longer fit for war service’. He was to reside at White Abbey Cottages High Road New Chilwell and his trade would be ‘Burning fuse caps’ munitions worker. The form states he was ‘ A sober ,steady and well behaved man’ and of good character and that he had served on the home front from 19th July 1916 until 27th September 1917 a total of 1 year and 292 days. He died on 3rd July 1918 aged 23 years and is buried in St Mary’s churchyard Attenborough under a commonwealth war grave headstone. The commonwealth war grave entry states ' Son of Fredrick and Adeline Whitehead, of Grove Avenue, New Chilwell.' Research by Peter Gillings
