Family History

James Riley was born in 1883 at Ballinasloe , County Galway, Ireland. James married Gertrude Emily Buckingham born 13th July 1886 in 1907 their marriage was recorded in the Grantham Registration district, they lived at Shelford village and had the following children, Gertrude Kate born July 1907, John James born December 1908, Kathleen Mary born June 1910, Sydney born October 1912, James Wilfred born February 1915 and Bertie born January 1917. In the 1911 census the family are living at Podders Farm, Mapperley Plains, Nottingham and are shown as James Riley 28 yrs a cowman on a farm, he is living with his wife Gertrude 24 yrs and their children, Kate 3 yrs, John 2 yrs and Mary 10 months of age. Following his death his widow Gertrude was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 12th November 1917.

Military History

Private James Riley enlisted at Nottingham on 23th May 1915, he gave his age as 35 yrs and 3 months , his address as Peas Hill, Cotgrave he stated he was a farm labourer. He served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action on 23rd April 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 7
