Family History

James Smalley Thompson was born in 1885 at Tuxford, he was the son of William John Thompson a farmer and Annie Thompson née Smalley of West Markham. His father William John was born in 1847 at Ollerton, his mother Annie Smalley was born in 1850 at Harby, they were married in 1873 in Nottinghamshire, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood In the 1911 census the family are living at West Markham, Tuxford, William John 65 yrs a farmer is living with his children James Smalley 26 yrs a farm worker and Nellie Margaret 24 yrs a house keeper, also living at the address are 3 farm servants. James married Hannah Bellamy on 19th June 1917 at East Retford, they had a daughter Lois Marianne born 15th August 1917 at Tuxford they lived at West Markham.

Military History

Private James Smalley Thompson enlisted on 11th December 1915 giving his age as 31 yrs and 1 month he was a farmer and shepherd, his next of kin was his wife Hannah of West Markham, Tuxord. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment service number 77076 when he embarked on 26th June 1917 at Folkstone, he arrived at Boulogne the same day. He was transferred to the Royal Wrst Kent Regiment on 21st July 1917. Subsequently taken as a prisoner of war he died on 30th September 1918 at a German Hospital at Sang-Du- Nord of inflamation of the intestine. He is buried at St Souplet British Cemetery, France.
