Family History

Ernest Swann was born in 1874 he married Eliza Hannah Swann née Walters (born 15th May 1873 ) on 28th November 1891 at Nottingham and was the father of Beatrice Alice, Eliza Hannah, Ernest, William, John Robert, Albert, Ida Elizabeth and Arthur (died in 1915) Swann. They lived at 76 Alfreton Road Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. In 1911 the family are living at Alfreton Road, Sutton in Ashfield, Ernest is 37 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Eliza Hannah 39 yrs and their children, Beatrice Alice 15 yrs, Eliza Hannah 13 yrs, Ernest 11 yrs, William 9 yrs, John Robert 7 years and Albert 4 yrs of age. Commencing 13th December 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings a week.

Military History

Private Ernest Swann enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed in France on 18th March 1915. He was Killed in action during the attack on Rouge De Bout, France, 9th May 1915, age 43, during the Second Battle of Artois. Having no known grave his name is Commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium. Panel 7.
