Family History

Arthur Worrall was born in 1879 at Sowe, Coventry and was the son of William a coal miner and Selina Worrall née Sidwell of 50 Bentinck Street, Hucknall Torkard. His father William was born in 1855 at Sowe and his mother Selina Sidwell was born in 1854 in Sowe. She died in 1910 aged 56 yrs her death was recorded in the Basford registration district. They were married on 25th September 1876, their marriage was recorded in the Coventry registration district. They went on to have the following children, William Richard b1877, Arthur b1879, John Thomas b1881, Florence b1883, Albert Sidney b1884, Elsie Alverta b1890 and Oliver Lawrence b1892, all were born in Sowe, In the 1901 the family was living at 50 Bentinck Street, Hucknall. By the 1911 census the family was still living at 50 Bentinck Street, Hucknall and were shown as William Worrall 55 yrs a widower coal miner, who was living with his son Oliver Lawrence 18 yrs a coal miner pony driver. Arthur's pension record gives his dependant as Harriett Johnson 1 Fewkes Lane, Whitwick, Leicesershire, his unmarried wife.

Military History

Private Arthur Worrall enlisted on 5th September 1914 at Coalville, he gives his age as 32 yrs and 256 days, he gave his address as Fowkes Lane, Whitwick, he stated he was a collier, his next of kin was his father William Worrall 50 Bentinck Street, Hucknall, he stated he was a widower. He was given the service number 13126 and posted to the Leicestershire Regiment. He was discharged from the army on 15th October 1914 as unlikely to become an efficient solder. He later re joined and served with the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment and served in Mesopotamia where he was killed in action on 23rd April 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.

Extra Information

His brother Private Oliver Lawrence Worrall enlisted at Hucknall and served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he was killed in action on 6th July 1917 and is buried at Poperinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium. CWGC gives his name as Arthur WARRALL as does UK Soldiers Died in the Great War, however the Register of Soldiers' Effects names him as Worrall as does his army service record. Also, census returns are in the name Worrall.
