Family History

Leonard Wooton was born in 1887 at Castle Donnington, Leicester and was the son of the late Sydney Sydney a brewers labourer and Ann Wooton née Bosworth His father Sydney Wooton was born in 1844 at Castle Donnington he died in 1894 aged 50 yrs, his mother Ann Bosworth was born in 1844 also at Castle Donnington she died in 1903 they were married in 1861 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they had the following children, Thomas b1863, John b1866, Mary Ellen b1869, Sidney b1871, Henry 1874, Frederick b1876, Albert b1879, Ernest b1880, Robert b1885 and Leonard b1887 all were born in Castle Donington. Leonard lived at 51 Victoria Street, Hucknall, whilst his brother Thomas Lived at 4 Welbeck Street Hucknall.

Military History

Private Leonard Wooton enlisted on 22nd May 1915 at Derby, he gave his age as 28 yrs and 4 months, his address was 261 Abbey Street, Derby and he was a labourer, his next of kin was his brother Thomas Wooton of 4 Welbeck Street, Hucknall, he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was declared a deserter from the 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment at a court of enquiry held on 14th April 1916 at Gateshead having been absent without leave from 18th March 1916. He rejoined his unit on 10th May 1916 however he again deserted on 6th October 1916, he rejoined his unit once again on 13th January 1917. He was sentenced to 1 year detention however he was sent to France on on 12th February 1917 being posted to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was appointed to Lance Corporal on 29th November 1917. On 4th November 1918 he was killed in action whilst serving with the 9th battalion Sherwood Forester Regiment and is buried at Sebourg British Cemetery, France.
