Family History

John Edward Wootton was born in 1888 in Hucknall and was the son of William a coal miner and Elizabeth Ann Wootton née Bramley of 36, Victoria St, Hucknall. His father was born in 1854 in Bilston, Staffordshire and his mother was born in 1861 in Alfreton. They were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration area they had 16 children, 7 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were all born in Hucknall and were Florence b1885, William b1887, John Edward b1888, Elizabeth Ann b1890, Beatrice May b1898, Ethel b1900, Cyril b1906 and Sidney Harold Bramley b1910. In the 1911 census the family was living at 18 Victoria Street, Hucknall and were shown as William Wooton 57 yrs an unemployed coal miner, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 45 yrs and their children, John Edward 23 yrs a coal miner banksman, Elizabeth Ann 21 yrs working at home, Eliza 20 yrs, Florence May 13 yrs a scholar, Ethel 11 yrs a scholar, Cyril 5 yrs of age, and Sidney 1 year old.

Military History

Private John Edward Wooton served with the 3rd battalion The Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire Regiment, died on the 12th March 1921 and is buried at Hucknall Cemetery

Extra Information

His brother William Wooton enlisted on the 10th March 1914, he gave his age as 24 yrs and 11 months and his occupation was that of a coal miner, he lived at 19 Springfield, Kimberley. He joined the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters and served with the service number 265266. He was embodied for war on 5th August 1914 and landed in France on 28th February 1915 where he served until 29th November 1915 when he was returned to England. He once again returned to France on 10th June 1917 where he served until 26th August 1917 when he was once again returned to England. On 13th November 1917 he was discharged from the Army being no longer physically fit to serve. He was awarded a silver war badge number 269021
