Family History

Cecil Smalley was born in 1888 at Brinsley and was the son of Thomas a colliery haulage contractor and Emma Smalley née Nunn of Croft House, Old Brinsley, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1854 at Brinsley and his mother Emma Nunn was born in 1859at South Green, Suffolk, they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 7 children, Jessie b1881 Milton, Hampshire, Percy b1883 Milton, Lillian b1884 Brinsley Jack b1885 Brinsley, Agatha b1887 Brinsley, Cecil b1888 Brinsley and Olive b1890 Brinsley. In the 1911 census the family are living at Old Brinsley and are shown as Thomas 57 yrs a colliery haulage contractor, he is living with his wife Emma 52yrs and their children, Lillian 26 yrs no occupation listed, Agatha 24 yrs no occupation listed, Cecil 23 yrs a bank clerk and Olive 21 yrs an assistant teacher.

Military History

Private Cecil Smalley enlisted at Yeovil, Somerset and served with the 7th battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment.) He was killed in action at Cherisy on 3rd May 1917 , having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial

WMA 26854 - Cecil Smalley (St James the Great, Brinsley): 'To the undying and most precious memory of Cecil Smalley of the 7th Buffs, a worshipper here with his parents who have raised this tablet. He was killed in action at Cherisy on May 3rd 1917, aged 29 years, and lies buried in France. He was the light of our eyes and the joy of all who knew him. ‘The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord.’'
