Sidney Wilmott

Sidney Harold Wilmott was born in 1897 in Hucknall and was the son George Henry Wilmott. His father was born in 1854 at New Brompton, Derbyshire. At the time of the 1881 Census George (26), a coal miner, was living on Eastwell Street, Hucknall Torkard with Hannah Wilmott (26, b. Calverton), who was described as his wife. Also in the home on the night of the census was Arthur Askew (2, b. Basford) who was described as George's stepson. Hannah was born Hannah Watson, the daughter of Samuel and Ann Watson and born in Calverton c1853. In 1861 Hannah and her family were living on Collyers Lane, Calverton. There is then a record of the marriage of a Hannah Watson to Samuel Askew in 1876 (J/F/M Basford). Samuel Askew has not yet been traced on the 1881 Census by when Hannah was calling herself 'Wilmott' and living with George Wilmott as his wife. At the time of the 1891 Census George Wilmott (36), a coal miner, was living at Spring Bank, Hucknall Torkard, with Hannah Askew (37, b. Calverton) described on the census as his housekeeper. Also in the household were Arthur Askew (12), described as George's son, and Florence E Wilmott, Mabel Wilmott and William Wilmott, who were also described as his children. The ages of the three youngest children are illegible on the census record. By 1901 George Wilmott (47), who was still working as a coal miner, was living at 2 Victoria Street, Hucknall. In the household on the night of the census were Hannah Wilmott (46), described as his wife, their sons Frederick Askew Wilmott (24 b. Hucknall), Arthur Askew Wilmott (22 b. Basford) and William Wilmott (20 b. Hucknall) who were all coal miner hewers, John (8 b. Hucknall) and Sydney Wilmott (3 b. Hucknall) and their two daughters Florence Ethel Wilmott (13 b. Hucknall) and Mabel Ann Wilmott (10). Mabel Ann died in 1904 (O/N/D Basford) aged 14. The family home was at 15 Spring Street, Hucknall, by 1911. Although no record has yet been found of George Henry Wilmott's marriage, he was described as a widower on the census return which would have been completed by George as head of household. George was now working as a sawyer at a colliery. Living with him were Hannah Askew (56), a married woman described as a 'boarder' who was his housekeeper, and his sons John Henry Wilmott (18) a farm labourer and Sidney Harold Wilmott (13) an errand lad. Hannah probably died in 1929 (Wilmott, Jun Basford) age 75 (b. abt 1854). George declared on the 1911 Census that he had had six children of whom only three were still living. Of the seven children named on the census returns between 1881 and 1911 when he was living with Hannah only Mabel is known to have died before 1911. It appears from the birth and census records that the two older boys, Frederick [Askew/Askew Wilmott] and Arthur [Askew/Askew Wilmott], were Hannah's from her marriage to Samuel Askew although William, the third boy who was always named 'Wilmott' on the census records, was nearer in age to them than the four younger children (Florence, Mabel, John and Sidney). Their details appear to be: Frederick Askew b. 1876 (O/N/D Basford). Frederick has not been traced before 1901. Arthur Askew b. abt 1879 (no matching birth record found, possibly Alfred Askew b. 1879 J/A/S Basford). William Wilmott probably b. 1881 (O/N/D Basford). He may have married Winifred Cooper in 1903 (O/N/D Basford) and living at 47 Derbyshire Lane, Hucknall Torkard, in 1911: William Wilmott (30 b. Hucknall), a coal miner, Winifred (28, b. Sneinton) and Winifred Olive (6, b. Hucknall). They were still living in Hucknall in 1939 at the time of the national register: William Wilmott (b. 12 November 1880) a coal mine deputy, Winifred (b. 21 September 1882) and their married daughter Winifred O. Sullivan (b. 13 July 1904) a knitted underwear and outerwear designer, her husband Sidney Sullivan (b. 13 November 1900), a deputy manager for a hosiery manufacturer, and Sarah E Cooper (b. 20 December 1875), single, working for a tailor, who was probably a relation of William's wife. Florence Ethel Wilmott b. 1887 (J/A/S Basford). Probably married Robert Marshall 1905 (J/A/S Nottingham). Living at 7 Eland Street, New Basford, in 1911; Robert (25, b. Hucknall) was a bootmaker and repairer on his own account, and they had one child, Doris Mabel (5, b. Hucknall). Florence probably died in October 1930 (Dec Nottingham) age 43. Mabel Ann Wilmott b. 1890 (O/N/D Basford), probably died 1904 (O/N/D Basford) age 14.
