Wilfred Harry Picken was born in 1889 and was the son of the late George a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Picken née Murphy he was the stepson of Elizabeth Picken née Blud. George was born in 1861 he died in 1903 aged 55 yrs and Mary Ann Murphy was born in 1851 both were born at Dawley, Shropshire, married in 1876 at Madley, Shropshire. In 1911 Wilfred is living at 25 Alfred Street Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire he is shown as 22 yrs of age and a labourer, he is living with his stepmother Elizabeth Picken 64 yrs a widow and a shop keeper. He was the brother of John Thomas Picken of 26 Walkden Street Mansfield.
Lance Corporal Wilfred Picken enlisted on 11th December 1915 at Mansfield, giving his age as 27 yrs and 165 days, he was a labourer living at 26 Walkden Street, Mansfield. Posted to the reserves the following day he was mobilised for war on 1st March 1916 and posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed at Boulogne on 11th July 1916 and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 22nd March 1917. He was wounded on 1st July 1917 (gun shot wound to his back) and killed in action on 20th October 1917 and is buried at Philosophie British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France.
