Family History

John Morley was the son of John Morley and Ellen Lacey who had married at Retford in 1891. John the younger, was born in 1894 in Retford. His mother died in 1897 aged just 25 years old. In 1901, John and his son, John, were both living with Samuel and Hannah Morley, the parents of John senior and grandparents to young John, at 8 High Street, Ordsall, Retford. In 1902, John senior married once again to Ellen Pettinger, a widow with two children and in 1911 the family were resident at 24 The Square, Retford. John junior was working as a telegraph lad and his father as a drayman.

Military History

He was one of the 9,000 men, commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France, who fell in the period from 8 August 1918 to the date of the Armistice in the Advance to Victory in Picardy and Artois, between the Somme and Loos, and who have no known grave.
