Family History

George Thomas Moakes was born in 1875 at Farnsfield, he was the son of the late George Moakes a farm labourer and the late Eunice Alice Moakes née Pembleton. His father George was born in 1840 at Teversall he died in 1907 aged 67 yrs, his mother Eunice Alice Pemberton was born in 1844 at Farnsfield, she died in 1893 aged 49 yrs, they were married on 27th March 1861 at St Peters Church, Mansfield, they went on to have 10 children. George Thomas married Deborah Clark (born 1880) in 1894 at Grantham, they lived at Main Street and later Bulpit Lane (both Balderton) his widow was awarded a pension of 5 shillings a week on 28th May 1917.

Military History

Private George Moakes enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Newark, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in France on 18th March 1915, he was killed in action on 31st October 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
