George Mansell was born in 1893 at Huthwaite and was the son of Edwin a coal miner and his first wife the late Gillian Mansell née Bettison of Main Street, Huthwaite. His father Edwin was born in 1868 at Pilsley, Derbyshire and his mother Gillian Bettison was born in 1871, she died in 1898 at Huthwaite aged 27 yrs they were married in 1888 at Mansfield. His father Edwin re married in 1901 at Mansfield to Sarah Jane Richard , they went on to have a son Edwin born 1901 they lived at Main Street, Huthwaite. In the 1911 census George is shown as being 18 yrs of age, he is a coal miner and is living at 14 Cyril Avenue, Chapel Street, Bobbersmill, Nottingham, with his uncle Samuel Bettison 39 yrs a coal miner and his wife and family. George married his wife Rosie Mary Nevitt at Fulbeck, Lincolnshire on 13th May 1915, they went on to have a daughter Betsy Mary Gillian born 22nd October 1917, the family lived in the village of Fulbeck.
Private George Mansell enlisted at Mansfield on 19th August 1914, he gave his age as 21 yrs and 201 days, he was living at Main Street, Huthwaite with his father Edwin, he stated he was a united Methodist and a coalminer. He was posted to the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment on 21st August 1914. He saw service with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 1st July 1915 until 27th June 1916 and then with the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front from 28th June 1916 until 4th December 1916. He was awarded a Military Medal for action on 19th October 1916. He was returned to England on 5th December 1916 and appeared before a medical board which found he was no longer physically fit for war service and was discharged on 24th July 1917 to his address at Fulbeck. He died on 3rd November 1918 (due to the effects of gas) and is buried at Fulbeck (St Nicholas) Churchyard
