Family History

Amos Walker was born in 1891 at Hucknall and was the son of Joseph s coal miner stall man and Salome Walker née Abel of 32 Belvoir Street, Hucknall. His fathere Joseph was born in 1866 at Marehay, Derbyshire his mother Salome Abel was born in 1865 at Griffydam, Leicestershire, they were married in 1890 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham registration district, they went on to have the following children, Amos b1891 Mabel Eveline b1894, Elsie b1897, Herbert Freeman b1898 all born at Radford and Edna May Walker b1902 Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family lived at 32 Belvoir Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire and were shown as Joseph 45 yrs a coal miner stallman, he is living with his wife Salome 46 yrs and their children Amos 19 yrs a coal miner rope walker, Mabel Eveline 17 yrs a tailoress, Elsie 14 yrs a tailoress, Herbert Freeman 13 yrs a scholar and Edna May 9 yrs of age. His probate was proven on 19th November 1919 and shows him as Amos Walker 5 James Street, Hucknall, Nottingham a miner died 6th November 1919, his effects of £279 and 12 shillings were left to Hebert Freeman Walker and Arthur Chamberlain miners.

Military History

Private Amos Walker enlisted at Hucknall 12th January 1915, giving his age as 23 yrs and 280 days, his address was 32 Belvoir Street, Hucknall, his next of kin was his father Joseph Walker of the same address, he was a coal miner .He served with the Royal Army Medical Corps and arrived in France 2nd September 1915 (Medal Roll). He was wounded 19th August 1916 (gunshot wounds to left arm, left thigh and right buttock) and suffered from asthma and was returned to England on 21st August 1916. He once again embarked from Southampton on 20th April 1917 arrived at Le Harve the following day. He was discharged from the army 27th June 1918. He died on 6th November 1919 of double pneumonia and is buried at Hucknall Cemetery.
