Samuel Lucas was born in 1882 at Mansfield and was the son of the late Wiiliam a coal miner and Harriett Lucas néé Ford of 18 Laurel Street, St Ann's, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1853 at Boughton, Nottinghamshire, he died in 1899 aged 47 yrs, his mother Harriett Ford was born in 1853 at Chesterfield, they were married on 23rd May 1875 at Chesterfield, they had the following children, Sybil b1877, Eliza b1880, Ann b1881, Samuel b1882, William b1885, Maud b1887 and Nellie b1890 In the 1911 census his mother and siblings are living at 18 Laurel Street, St Ann's, Nottingham, they are shown as Harriett 57 yrs a widow, she is living with her children, Sybil 34 yrs a blouse machinist, Maud 24 yrs a lace clipper, and Nellie 21 yrs a blouse machinist. Samuel married his wife Sarah Elizabeth Matheson on 19th May 1902 at Emmanuel Church, Nottingham, they lived at 13 Cavendish Street, Shirebrook, Mansfield and had the following children Margurite Sybil b1902, William John b1904, Eleanor b1907, Robert b1910 and George Richard b1915. Following his death his widow Sarah was awarded a pension of 37 shillings and 11 pence a week which commenced on 10th June 1918.
Private Samuel Lucas enlisted on 6th October 1914 at Mansfield giving his age as 32 yrs and 181 days, his address was 6 Ashbourne Street, Shirebrook, he was a coal miner and his next of kin was his wife Sarah Elizabeth of the same address. He was posted to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 6th March 1915 and was wounded a gun shot wound to his scalp on 14th March 1915 for which he was admitted to the 4th general hospital at Rouen. He was killed in action on 24th November 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
