Isaiah Varley was born in 1893 at Hucknall and was the son of John a coal miner hewer and the late Elizabeth Varley née Hirst of 11 Mellors Row, Hucknall His father John was born in 1858 at Hucknall his mother Elizabeth Hirst was born in 1857 at Hucknall she died in 1912 aged 55 yrs, they were married on 1st September 1874 at Hucknall and went on have 8 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood, their children were Mary Elizabeth b1882, Sarah b1884 Ralph b1886, John b1892, Isaiah b1893 and Isabella Varley b1895 all were born in Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family lived at at 11 Mellors Row Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire, they were shown as John 53 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 54 yrs and their children, Ralph 23 yrs a pit bank worker, John 19 yrs a pit bank worker, Isaiah 17 yrs a pit bank worker, Isabella 15 yrs a domestic servant Daisy Green 8 yrs a scholar, listed as an adopted daughter also living with them is William Varley 50 yrs a pit bank worker and a brother.

Military History

Private Isaiah Varley enlisted at Hucknall, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 8th August 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
