She was the daughter of George (born Marchington Staffordshire) and Esther Ann Pakeman who was born at Dale Abbey Derbyshire. She was the brother of John, Ernest Charles and Lily Pakeman. Alice was baptised 5th June 1892 at St Helen’s Stapleford. In 1901 and 1911 she lived with her parents and siblings T 12 East Street Stapleford Nottinghamshire. In 1911 they had been joined by two boarders one of whom was Harry Hicklin who she married at St Nicholas Church Nottingham on February 18th 1913. A daughter, Marjorie Esther, was born 6th June 1913 in Stapleford. They lived at 16 East Street Stapleford.

Alice had been badly affected by the Zeppelin raid of 31st January 1916 during which Stanton Ironworks, Bennerley Viaduct and the railway at Kimberley were bombed by Zeppelin L-20. The Zeppelin left over Stapleford/Beeston/Chilwell and she became depressed convinced the Zeppelins would return. On 28th February 1916, her mother went to bed, expecting her to follow. The next morning her mother discovered her bed had not been slept in and went to search for her. Her shawl was found on top of a cistern, and when she looked inside, she found that Alice had drowned. Her inquest was held in Stapleford 1st March 1916 and the jury ruled ‘Suicide during temporary insanity’ Alice is buried in an unmarked grave in Stapleford Cemetery Harry Hicklin enlisted in Nottingham on 9th November 1914 as 5156 Private Harry Hicklin and was assigned to 10th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He landed in France on 22nd July 1915. He was awarded one days Field Punishment No.1 on 6th November 1915 Harry was wounded in the right side and abdomen by shrapnel on 8th September 1916 at Guillemont, France. He was admitted to 21st CCS on 9th September and was returned to England on 13th September. He was posted to 6th Battalion, Rifle Brigade on 9th December 1916 for home service. He transferred as 280390 Private to 603rd (H.S.) Employment Company, Labour Corps, on 1st July 1917. He was discharged 12th February 1919. Harry Hicklin’s death was registered in December 1960.
