Family History

Robert Matthew Grandidge was born in 1899 in Doncaster and was the son of Robert a cattle dealers assistant and Ada Emma Grandidge née Jackson of 3, High Fisher Gate, Doncaster, Yorkshire. His father Robert was born in 1871 at Doncaster and his mother Ada Emma Jackson was born in 1874 at Bawtry, they were married on 12th March 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Doncaster Registration District, they went on to have 9 children, sadly two of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Doncaster were, Sarah Eva b1893, John b1897, Robert b1899, Roy b1903, Ivy b1905, Edith b1907 and Edward b1914. In the 1911 census the family are living at 30 Market Road, Doncaster and are shown as Robert 40 yrs a cattle dealers assistant, he is living with his wife Ada 37 yrs and their children, Eva 18 yrs no occupation listed, John 14 yrs assisting his father, Robert 10 yrs scholar, Roy 8 yrs scholar, Ivy 6 yrs scholar and Edith 4 yrs.

Military History

Private Robert Matthew Grandidge enlisted at Doncaster whilst residing at Bawtry, he served with the 7th battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 18th June 1918 and is buried in Vermelles British Cemetery (grave ref IV.A.12)
