Bert was born in 1887 at East Markham and was the son of John an agricultural labourer and Emma Fletcher of The Croft , East Markham. He was one of 12 children born to John and Emma. He had four brothers and seven sisters. In 1901 the family are living at York Street, East Markham. Bert married Nellie McCormick on 18th February 1906 at Retford Registry office and they went on to have 2 children Bertha Mary born 6th July 1907 and Albert Edward born 16th May 1909. In 1911 Bert lived at Top Street East Markham. Following his death his family lived at London Road East Markham.
Bert enlisted at Retford on 10th December 1915, he gave his age as 29 years and 2 months and his occupation as that of a cowman, his next of kin his wife Nellie of East Markham. On the 11th December he was put into the Army reserve and on 21st March 1917 was mobilised and on the 23rd posted to the Sherwood Foresters. On the 27th July 1917 he went to France where he was posted to A Company 2/7th battalion, Sherwood Foresters . He was killed in action on 26th September 1917 and he is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium, grave reference XIII D 6
