James Steer was born in 1888 at Midhurst, Sussex and was the son of James Steer a game keeper and Elizabeth Steer of Henley Hill, Haselmere , Sussex. James Steer married his wife Elizabeth Drinkwater in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, Elizabeth brought a son to the marriage Harry Ewart Drinkwater born 16th March 1908, they went on to have 2 further children, Nancy Elizabeth born 13th August 1912 and James born 24th April 1915, they lived at 45 Charles Street, Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family lived at 29 Albert Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire and were shown as James Steer 23 yrs a colliery shunter, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 24 yrs a shawl stitcher and his stepson Harry Ewart Drinkwater 3 yrs of age. Following his death his widow Elizabeth was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 10th January 1916.
Private James Steer, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Hucknall he served with the 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 9th May 1915 during the attack on Rouge De Bout, France,during the Second Battle of Artois.He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
Steer was born A/M/J/1888 so may have been 27 when killed.
