Family History

John William Dobson was born in 1889 at Ashby, Lincolnshire he was the son of William a general labourer and Alice Eliza Dodson née Cook of 45 Tooley Street, Gainsborough. His father William was born in 1864 at Cantley, Yorkshire his mother Alice Eliza Cook was born in 1865 at Wheatley, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Doncaster registration district, they had a further son George Henry born 1895 at Canley. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Tow Street, Gainsborough, William 47 yrs is a general labourer, he is living with his wife Alice Eliza 46 yrs and their 2 sons, John William 21 yrs an engineers general labourer and George Henry 16 yrs an apprentice boilerman.

Military History

Private John William Dodson enlisted at Gainsborough whilst residing at Retford. He initially served with the service number 4105 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was serving with the 10th battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment and was killed in action on 18th November 1916, he is buried at Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt, France.
