Thomas Spinks was born in 1879 in Coseley, Staffordshire and was the son of Levi (also known as Salathiel) Spinks a coal miner and Sarah Ann Spinks née Bowater of Hucknall. His father Levi was born in 1854 in Coseley and his mother Sarah Ann Bowater was born in 1857 in Coseley. They were married on 31st May 1875 at St Thomas Church at Dudley and went on to have the following children, Thomas b1879 Coseley, William b1881 Coseley, Rhoda b1885 Hucknall and Esther b1889 Hucknall. Thomas married his wife Julia Betteridge in 1900 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District. (she was born 1880 at Blackwell, Derbyshire. In the 1911 census Thomas is living at 81 Building Street, Hucknall he is shown as being 32 yrs and a coal miner , he is living with his wife Julia 31 yrs. His pension record card shows they had a son Thomas born 30th May 1916, his widow was living at 55 Thomas Street, Doncaster she was awarded a pension of 12 shillings and 6 pence which commenced on 10th April 1916 and was increased to 25 shillings on 7th May 1918
Private Thomas Spinks enlisted at Doncaster and served with the 1st battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he landed in France on 31st August 1915 and was killed in action on 30th September 1915 his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
Article published 28th October 1915 in the Hucknall Dispatch :- “Many Hucknall people who have a remembrance of Mr. Thomas Spinks, who left the town some 2½ years ago to work at Bullcroft Colliery, will regret to hear of his death in France on September 25th, [sic] he being a private in K.O.Y.L.I. His home was at 55, St. Thomas street, Doncaster, and much sympathy is felt for the wife and relatives.
