Family History

John William Hallard was born in 1885 at Stratford, Essex, the son of the late Charles Edward Hallard a cowman and Martha Maud Hallard nee Sones.of 2 Brydges Road, Stratford Essex. Charles Edward Hallard was born in 1860 at Stratford, Essex he died in 1895 aged 35 yrs, Martha Maud Sones was born in 1868 at Middlesex, they were married on 24th December 1884 at St Marys Church, Stratford Bow, Poplar, they went on to have 6 children. The family was living at 2 Brydges Rd, West Ham in the 1901 census. John. aged 15, was working as a railway messenger boy, In the 1911 census his widowed mother was living at 2 Brydges Road, Stratford, Essex, Martha Maud 43 yrs is a laundress she is living with 4 of her children. John William in the 1911 census was living at East Stockwith, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire with 'wife' Rose. Aged 25, he was a boiler riveter. Rose was aged 28. It was further recorded this couple had been together 4 years, no children. (no marriage has been located) his pension record card shows his unmarried wife was Rose Vince of 24 Beresford Street, New Coultham, Lincolnshire. His will read - In the event of my death I give the whole of my property and effects to Rose Vince, known as Mrs. Rose Hallard, 60 Waterloo St. 18/4/15 J. W. Hallard Private No. 14310 Lincolnshire Regt His mother Martha M Hallard was authorised to receive payment of £2/5/- on 1 October 1915. Then on 17 September 1919 his sole legatee Mrs. Rose Hallard was authorised to receive £3. [7]

Military History

Private John William of the 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, Regimental No. 14310, was killed in action on 22 May 1915 at Belgium [WWI]. His death is commemorated at Spoilbank Cemetery, Belgium [Plot 1, Row C, Grave John was posthumously awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1915 Star.

His brother Charles Edward Hillard served with the service number 203539 in The Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 18th December 1917, he is buried at Wancourt British Cemetery, France. additional research and information Peter Gillings
