Ernest was the son Ann Maria Griffin and the late Noah Griffin. After Noah's death Ann Maria married Josiah Morris. Ernest was the brother of Clara, Edith and George Griffin and the half brother of Florence, Elise and Fanny Morris. In 1911 the family lived at 90 Duke Street Cresswell Mansfield Nottinghamshire. On 23rd December 1911,when he was 21 he married Mary Ann Hinks at Elton with Creswell, Derbyshire. Following Ernest’s death , his widow Mary remarried and became Mary Potter of 10 Birk Hill Eckington Sheffield and on 13/11/1919 andreceived a war gratuity .
Ernest Griffin was posted after training to 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) and entered theatre (France) on 24 March 1915. Ernest was probably one of the 193 reinforcements who joined the battalion during the evening of 22nd March. 4/6th March 1917 - St Pierre Vaast - The battalion were tasked with capturing the ridge south of St Pierre Vaast Wood. This had been attacked and captured twice before by the French but retaken by the German's. On 4th Ernest survived the heavy fighting and successful taking of the ridge despite counter attacks by the Enemy. On the evening of 4th 'A' and 'B' companies were withdrawn but 'C' and 'D' companies remained in the line until the morning of the 5th. Ernest was in 'C' company and at some point he was killed and buried nearby. After the Armistice his body was reburied in Sailly-Saillisel British Cemetery, grave IV. I.7. John Morse
