John was born in 1892 in Hucknall and was the son of John Roome a coal miner hewer and Elizabeth Roome née Bexton. His father John senior was born in 1865 at Whitwick, his mother Elizabeth Bexton was born in 1867 in Hucknall Torkard, they were married in 1887, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district. They had a total of 11 children , sadly 5 of them died in infancy or childhood prior to 1911. Their surviving children were:- James b1888, , John b1892,Walter b1900, Albert b1904 Charles b1906 and Selina b1908 all the children were born in Hucknall Torkard. John father John died when he was 42years of age in 1907, the death was recorded in the Basford Registration district. In the 1911 census the family are living at 53 George Street, Hucknall, Elizabeth Roome 44 years , head of the family , a widow is living with her children, John 19 yrs a coal miner ropeman, Walter 11 yrs, Albert 7 yrs, Charles 5 yrs, Selina 3 yrs. John (junior) married his wife Kate Walker on 27th December 1913, they were married at Basford Registry Office, they went on to have two sons Thomas Walter born 3rd July 1914 in Hucknall and John born in the first quarter of 1918. The family lived at 4 Trueman Street, Hucknall.
Rifleman John Roome enlisted at Hucknall on 14th January 1915, he gave his age as 23 yrs and 170 days , his address as 4 Trueman Street, Hucknall, his next of kin was his wife Kate of the same address, his occupation was that of a miner. He was posted to Winchester barracks on 15th January 1915 and on 19th January that year was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He first entered a theatre of war in France on 31st July 1915, and while in action near Albert, France on 13th July 1916 was wounded in action, he received a gun shot wound to his left leg. On 16th July 1916 he was posted home due to his injuries and admitted to Duston War Hospital on the same day. He remained at the hospital receiving treatment until 9th November 1916 when he was transferred to Milton Hospital, Peterborough. He was returned back to Duston Hospial, Northampton on 23rd January 1917. Following a medical board convened on 17th July 1917 he was found medically unfit to continue serving in the army and on 7th August 1917 he was discharged, he had served for 2 yrs 206 days. He was awarded a silver war badge on his discharged number 223567. Following his return home he died at Hucknall on 13th November 1918, he is buried in Hucknall Cemetery
