Family History

Harold was born in 1895 at Arnold the son of William Henry a farm labourer and Mary Ann Marshall née Bacon who lived at Cross Street Arnold in 1901. His father William Henry was born in 1854 in Daybrook and his mother Mary Ann Bacon was born in 1854 in Arnold, they were married in 1874 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district. They went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Arnold, Samuel b1876, Herbert b1880, Kezia b1882, Rebecca b1883, Leonard b1891 and Harold b1895. It would appear that his father died in 1907 aged 54 yrs and his mother died in 1905 aged 52 yrs both deaths were recorded in the Basford Registration District. In the 1911 Census he is a boarder living with his married sister Rebecca Merrins and her family at Cross St, he is shown as a colliery labourer (above ground) and is 16 yrs of age. Prior to his enlistment he lived at 58 Duke Street, Arnold, Nottingham.

Military History

He enlisted into the 1/7th Battalion (Robin Hoods ) Sherwood Foresters at Nottingham he was killed in action during the fighting for Gommecourt village and wood on the 1st day of the battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
