Harry Blinkhorn was born in 1896 at Mansfield and was the son of Amos a joiner and Ellen Kate Blinkhorn née Ward of 14 Clumber Street, Mansfield. His father Amos was born in 1861 at Sutton in Ashfield, his mother Ellen Kate Ward was born in 1861 at Mansfield they were married on 11th March 1883 at St John's Church, Mansfield they went on to have 12 children, sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood, their children were Edith Mabel b1883 (died 1886) William Joseph b1886, Fred b1889, Nelly b1891, Lucy b1893, Harry b1896, Elsie May b1899 Edith b1901, Dora b1903 and Elsie b1904 all were born in Mansfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Clumber Street, Mansfield and are shown as Amos 49 yrs a joiner, he is living with his wife Ellen Kate 49 yrs and their children, William Joseph 24 yrs a collier, Fred 22 yrs a carter, Nelly 20 yrs a mill hand, Lucy 18 yrs a mill hand, Harry 16 yrs a tripe dresser, Edith 14 yrs a scholar, Dora 12 yrs a scholar and Elsie 7 yrs of age.
Air Mechanic Harry Blinkhorn, enlisted on 4th February 1918 aged 21 yrs and 6 months, he served with the 13th Balloon Company, Royal Air Force, he died as a result of gas poisoning on 23rd October 1918. He is buried in Vadencourt British Cemetery, Massemy.
Newspaper article published 1st November 1918 in the Mansfield Reporter & Sutton Times :- “MANSFIELD PRIVATE GASSED. “Mrs. Blinkhorn, 14, Clumber-street, has received information from a clearing hospital in France that her son, Pte. Harry Blinkhorn, of the R.F.C., was admitted to hospital on 22nd October, suffering from the after effects of gas, and died on the 23rd.
