Herbert William Winfield

Private Herbert William Winfield, served with the 5th Cavalry Division Train, Royal Army Service Corps, and died on 30th November 1918. He was buried in Beirut War Cemetery,

Article published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 29th December 1915 gives details of a Mansfield butcher, Herbert Winfield who was fined 20s. 6d. on 29th December 1915 for being drunk, refusing to quit and biting the thumb of the landlord of the Queen's Head Hotel, Mansfield, a week previously. Winfield later joined up and died in Beirut after the Armistice. “HUMBLE APOLOGIES. “SERIOUS ASSAULT ON MANSFIELD LANDLORD. “A Mansfield butcher named Herbert Winfield pleaded guilty, before the Mansfield magistrates to-day, [29th December 1915] to refusing quit the Queen’s Head Hotel and assaulting the landlord, Mr. Edward S. Oliver, by biting his thumb, on December 22nd. “To the prosecutor the defendant wrote expressing his sorrow for the trouble he had caused, and his humble apology, said he would willingly pay the expenses which had been caused, and he would see that such a thing did not occur again. “Mr. R. H. King, who appeared for the landlord, said the defendant entered the premises the worse for drink, and refused to leave when requested to go. Soon afterwards, without any provocation, he struck Mr. Oliver across the head, and later on bit him on the thumb very severely. “For the assault the defendant was fined 13s., and had pay 7s. 6d. for refusing to quit.”
