He enlisted in Mansfield and formerly served as 20335 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) and entered theatre - Gallipoli on 2 August 1915. It is likely he was one of several hundred men who were firstly loaned to 8th South Staffs and then taken on their strength in August 1916. The 8th South Staffs had suffered large casualties during the first few days of the Somme and urgently needed reinforcements.
