He was the son of William and Sarah Pegg. The 1911 census records that William (65) and Sarah (61) had been married for 43 years and had had 14 children born alive of whom ten were still living. Only three children were in the family home at 49 Annesley Road, Hucknall Torkard, at the time of the census; William (21), Gertude Radford (29), a professional vocalist, and Beatrice Ivy (17), who was studying music. The RND Casualties of the Great War record gives William's home address as 57 Watch House Lane, Bentley, Doncaster; his parents were still living at 49 Annesley Road, Hucknall Torkard.
HMS Victory (administrative establishment). He enlisted on 23 June 1915 and in July 1915 was attached to the 4th Depot Bn. On 1 October 1915 he was attached to the Signal School, RND Depot, Crystal Palace, and was serving at the Signal School when he was admitted to Croydon General Hospital on 30 March 1916 suffering from otitis media (both ears) and pneumonia. He died two weeks later on 14 April at 6.05am. He is buried in Hucknall Cemetery (grave ref. A.South 691).
Announcement published in the Nottingham Evening Post 15th April 1916 :- “PEGG. – On the 14th inst., at the Admiralty Ward, General Hospital, Croydon, London, of pneumonia, Signaller William Pegg, aged 26 years, only son of Mrs. and the late Mr. William Pegg, of 49, Annesley-road, Hucknall Torkard, Notts. Funeral Hucknall Torkard, Monday, [17th April 1916] 2.30.” Above announcement is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918. The personal inscription on the CWGC headstone reads, 'Peace perfect peace'.
