He was the son of James and Emma Howitt of Old Radford Nottingham. He married his wife Gertrude Eliza Andrews (born 12th January 1883 ) whom he married in 1903 at Nottingham and the father of May (born 27th October 1904)and Gwendoline ( born 11th April 1909 ) Howitt, they lived at 19 Lindley Street, Mansfield In 1911 they lived at 37 Welbeck Street Mansfield. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week which commenced on 9th April 1917.
Private James Henry Howitt enlisted at Mansfield and served with the 3rd battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. He died on 2nd October 1916 (Soldiers Effects register shows he committed suicide at Benton, Northumberland,) he is buried at Long Benton (Benton) Cemetery, Northumberland. Headstone Inscription: "Until The Day Break". His pension record card shows he died as a result of a gun shot would self inflicted whilst temporary insane due to disease caught whilst on active service.
This man is commemorated in a book of remembrance held by Mansfield District Council.
