Herbert Harold Murfin was born in 1897 in Hucknall Torkard, he was the son of Edward a coal engine winder and Martha Murfin née Bish of 13 Bentinck Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire. His father Edward was born in 1867 in Mansfield, his mother Martha Bish was born in 1866 in Woodborough, they were married in Nottingham in 1895 and went on to have 5 children , all of whom were born in Hucknall ,Fred b1890, Elizabeth b1892, Herbert Harold b1897, Edward b1901 and May b1906. In the 1911 census the family are living at 31 Bentinck Street, Hucknall, Torkard and are shown as Edward 44 yrs a colliery engine winder, he is living with his wife Martha 44 yrs and their children Fred 21 yrs a coal miner , ropeman, Herbert Harold 13 yrs a scholar, Edward 10 yrs a scholar and May 5 yrs.

Military History

Private Herbert Harold Murfin enlisted in Hucknall and served with the 2/6th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment , he was attached to the 629th Mechanical Transport Coy. Army Service Corps at the time of his death, he died on 10th July 1917, he is buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery grave reference 1.B.15
