Thomas King was born in 1884 at Nottingham and was the grandson of Thomas and Eliza King of Keyworth, Nottingham He married his wife Lydia Harriett Dodson (born 22nd June 1884 at Giltbrook) in 1906 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 10 Allen Street Hucknall and later 3 Lambert Hill, Hucknall, they had the following children, Sarah Ann born 6th October 1906, Frederick Herbert born 9th February 1908, Thomas Henry born 30th October 1910 and Frank born 2nd May 1915. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Meadows, Awsworth and are shown as Thomas 26 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Lydia Harriett 26 yrs and their children, Sarah Ann 4 yrs, Frederick Herbert 3 yrs and Thomas Henry 4 months old. Following his death his widow Lydia was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 4th December 1916.
Private Thomas King, enlisted at Hucknall, he served with 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Welbeck Rangers), he was killed in action during the night of 21st/22nd May 1916.aged 32, by a heavy German bombardment of trench mortars and rifle grenades whilst serving in the line near Gorre, France. He is buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery Richebourg- L'Avoue grave reference III F 25
Article published together with his photograph in the Hucknall Dispatch on 15th June 1916 :- "The above picture is Private Thomas King, of Lambert Hill, Hucknall, who is now sleeping neath foreign skies, having given his life for his country's cause on the battlefields of France. He first entered the army at the early age of 16 years, and spent 4 years in China. Afterwards he was discharged. "Not feeling contented when the war had been raging for a year, he re-enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters, and after training at Nottingham, Aldershot, and other places, he was despatched to France. "A letter from Lieut. Woodhouse to his widow (who is left with four children) states that he was killed on May 21st. The deceased was 32 years of age, the above portrait, which is the only one available, being taken in his younger days."
