Robert Clarence Mitchell was born in 1896 in Hucknall and was the son of Frederick a colliery engine driver and the late Hannah Mitchell. His father Frederick was born in 1859 in Hucknall and his mother Hannah was born in 1863 in Pinxton, they went on to have the following children Fred b1885 Linby, Martha Lilley b1899 Hucknall and Clarence Robert b1896. His mother Hannah Mitchell died in 1899 aged 37 yrs her death was recorded in the Basford Registration District.

Military History

Private Robert Clarence Mitchell, enlisted in Mansfield whilst residing in Rainworth he initially served with service number 2613 in the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment , he was later transferred to the 5th Battalion Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He landed in France on 28th June 1915 and was killed in action on 3rd May 1917. He has no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
