Alfred Leonard Wootton was born in 1898 at Ruddington he was the son of Leonard a frame work knitter and Sarah Ann Wootton née Needham of The Green, Ruddington. Leonard was born in 1863, Sarah Ann Needham was also born in 1863 both were born in Ruddington, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 3 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was Joseph Needham Wootton born 1892 at Ruddington. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Green Ruddington, Leonard 48 yrs is a frame work knitter, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 48 yrs and their 2 children, Joseph Needham 19 yrs a shipping clerk and Alfred Leonard 13 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Corporal Alfred Leonard Wootton enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 6th battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 23rd August 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
