George was born in 1896 in Hucknall and was the son of Richard a coal miner and the late Elizabeth Emily Mills née Jones of 11, Bestwood Rd., Butler's Hill, Hucknall, Notts. His father Richard was born in 1870 in Hugelscote, Leicester and his mother Elizabeth Emily Jones was born in 1873 , they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have two children , Clara Leticia b1894 in Hucknall and George b1896 in Hucknall. His mother Elizabeth Emily died in 1900 aged just 27 yrs , her death was recorded in the Basford Registration District. His father later married his second wife Hannah Haywood in 1902 in Nottingham, they went on to have 4 further children all born in Hucknall, they were Mary Ann b1906, Florrie b1908, Hannah b1909 and Joseph b1911. In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Bestwood Road, Butler's Hill, Hucknall Torkard and are shown as Richard Mills 41yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Hannah 35 yrs and his children , Clara Leticia 17 yrs a sewing machinist in a blouse factory, George 15 yrs a colliery labourer, Mary Ann 5 yrs, Florrie 3 yrs, Hannah 2 yrs and Joseph 3 months.
Private George Mills, enlisted at Hucknall, he initially served with the service number 13645 in the Lincolnshire Regiment before transferring to the 252nd Company Machine Gun Corps. He landed in France on 6th March 1915 and died of wounds on 9th October 1917. He is buried in Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France.
