Samuel Bagnall

Samuel Bagnall entered theatre after 1 January 1916. The battalion went into the front line on 5 July 1916 to attack, take its objective and consolidate the area. The battalion attacked in three columns using one company plus Lewis gunners and bombers (grenades). Other companies went over the top as and when they made it through the congested trenches. After many hours of close quarters fighting it became clear that all companies, except for 'D' had been forced back. At 9 pm,. 'D' company was withdrawn as it was in danger of being cut off. The battalion ended up virtually at the spot they had started from and had sustained high casualties. 'A' company had suffered very heavily after its continual attacks against the enemy line all afternoon. 'B' and 'C' companies had made three attacks and more than once reached their objectives only to be forced back by superior numbers and bombs. Samuel was one of 240 casualties that day and he died on 7 July at the Casualty Clearing Station in Meaulte. He was buried in Meaulte Military Cemetery, grave D.26 John Morse
