Family History

Charles William Adey May was born in 1896 at Hucknall and was the son of Charles William a baker/confectioner and Susannah May née Adey of 37 James Street Hucknall and later 3 Co Operative Avenue, Hucknall. His father Charles William was born in 1872 at Hucknall and his mother Susannah Adey was born in 1875 also at Hucknall, they were married in 1895 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Charles William b1896, Annie b1897 and Esther Elizabeth b1899 all were born in Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family lived at 6 West Street Hucknall Torkard and were shown as Charles William 39 yrs a baker/confectioner, he is living with his wife Susannah 36 yrs and their children, Charles William 15 yrs a bank lad coal sorter, Annie 14 yrs a hosiery stocking maker and Esther Elizabeth 12 yrs a scholar. Following his death his mother was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 12th June 1917.

Military History

Private Charles William Adey May enlisted at Hucknall, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 he is buried at Serre Road Cemetery No 1.
