Family History

Wilfred Henry Swann was born in 1895 at Whitwell, he was the son of John Thomas Swann a colliery joiner and Lucy Eleanor Swann née Ashberry of 35 Queens Road, Hodthorpe. His father John Thomas was born in 1866 at Holbeck, his mother Lucy Eleanor Ashberry was born in 1868 at Whitwell, they were married on 12th October 1892 at Norton Cuckney, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family lived at Front Street, Hodthorpe, John Thomas 45 yrs is a colliery joiner, he is living with his wife Lucy Eleanor 43 yrs and their children, Wilfred Henry 16 yrs a colliery joiners apprentice, Annie 13 yrs, Amy 12yrs, Mabel 10 yrs and Ruby 6 years of age.

Military History

Private Wilfred Henry Swann enlisted at Whitwell whilst residing at Mansfield, he served with 2/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.he was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 23, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact) Commemorated: Arras Memorial, France. Bay 7.
